UI Presidential Candidate Withdraws; Two More To Be Named Monday

One of five finalists for the position of President of The University of Iowa has withdrawn from consideration, according to David Johnsen, chair of the UI Presidential Search Committee and dean of the UI College of Dentistry. The names of two other finalists will be announced late Monday afternoon, June 11, he added.

The first two candidates for the UI presidency will interview on campus with the administrators, faculty, staff and student leaders and with the Board of Regents, state of Iowa, the UI's governing board, during the first half of the coming week.

Philip Furmanski, executive vice president for academic affairs at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, will interview with campus constituents on Monday, June 11, and with the Board of Regents on Tuesday, June 12. The 90-minute interview with the regents is open to the public and will begin at 11 a.m. in the Richey Ballroom of the Iowa Memorial Union.

Mark P. Becker, executive vice president for academic affairs and provost at the University of South Carolina, will interview with campus constituents on Tuesday, June 12, and in public session with the regents on Wednesday, June 13, at 9:30 a.m. in the Richey Ballroom.

In addition, each candidate will participate in a public forum from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m. in the Senate Chamber of the Old Capitol Museum on the day of his talks with campus constituents. Furmanski's forum on Monday will be followed by a reception from 5 to 5:45 p.m. in the Museum of Natural History in Macbride Hall. Becker's Tuesday forum will be followed by a reception in the Old Capitol Museum.

The open forums will be taped and broadcast on UITV at 7 and 9 p.m. on the day of the candidate's visit.

The Presidential Search Committee has asked all interested persons to complete online evaluations of the candidates at the following web addresses:

--Furmanski: http://survey.uiowa.edu/wsb.dll/radlw/evaluation_furmanski.htm.

--Becker: http://survey.uiowa.edu/wsb.dll/radlw/evaluation_becker.htm.

Because of the tight time schedule for presidential interviews, evaluations of Furmanski must be submitted by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, June 12. Evaluations of Becker must be submitted by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, June 13. After the respective 5 p.m. deadlines, each link will be closed.
