For Valentine's Day: It's Aquila Theatre's 'Romeo And Juliet' In Hancher
The University of Iowa Hancher Auditorium will celebrate Valentine's Day with a timeless story of uncompromising love: Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet," performed by the Aquila Theatre Company at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb. 13 and 14.
Audience members both nights are invited to pre-performance discussions at 6:30 p.m. in the Hancher greenroom, featuring representatives of the company. Seating is limited.
On Valentine's Day, Feb. 14, audience members can enjoy a romantic dinner featuring a menu drawn from Renaissance Italy. Advance reservations are required. The café will open at 5:30 with dinner served at 6 p.m.
"Romeo and Juliet" is such a classic love story that everyone knows the plot -- teenage lovers caught in the middle of a family feud -- and can probably even recite a few of the play's most famous lines. It remains as gripping and dynamic to contemporary audiences as it was to Londoners 400 years ago.
The Aquila Theatre Company's new production utilizes their highly talented British and American ensemble to create a stylistic adaptation focusing on the major themes of the story and bringing the text to vivid life.
Aquila has won international acclaim for its bold and stylish productions of Shakespeare, and it was the most active component in the National Endowment of the Arts Shakespeare in American Communities program, which recently brought "Othello" to Hancher.
A story in The New Yorker commented, "Aquila's productions are beautifully spoken, dramatically revealing and crystalline in effect."
"Romeo and Juliet" is presented with media support from the Gazette.
