Engineering College Hosts High School Student JETS Competition Feb. 3 And 7

Scholarships and bragging rights will be on the line when the University of Iowa College of Engineering hosts the Junior Engineering Technical Society (JETS) Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics, and Science (TEAM+S) Competition from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, and Wednesday, Feb. 7, at the Seamans Center for the Engineering Arts and Sciences, south of the Old Capitol building on the UI campus.

Beginning with the 8 a.m. registration and continuing through the 2 p.m. awards ceremony, the event will challenge students -- in a team environment -- to develop and use their problem-solving skills in engineering and technology-based fields. The competition consists of two 90-minute exams where students may use books, resources, notes and teamwork.

Participants, working in teams, will represent their schools as they work together on real-life engineering problems and compete against teams from across the country. The questions -- representative of college freshman-level engineering coursework -- deal with real-world engineering issues such as air transportation, bridge design and rehabilitation, flood analysis, solar-powered vehicles and food preservation.

The event will also provide students with local, state and national awards, trophies and scholarships. The members of each winning team (grouped by school enrollment size) will receive University of Iowa College of Engineering scholarships.
