'Culture Break @ Old Cap' Premieres Wednesday, Jan. 31

The University of Iowa Old Capitol Museum and Arts Share have teamed up to bring a new, noon-hour performing arts series to the Iowa City community starting Wednesday, Jan. 31.

Culture Break @ Old Cap, featuring free performances by faculty and students from the UI Division of Performing Arts, will take place over the lunch hour Wednesdays in the Old Capitol Senate Chamber.

Performances will begin around 12:10 p.m. and end around 12:50 p.m., leaving time for audience members to get to the Old Capitol, enjoy the performance and return to work within an hour. Performances will be presented the following Wednesdays this semester: Jan. 31, Feb. 14, Feb.  28, March 28, April 11 and April 25. Pieces and works presented will be announced by the performers.

The first performance will feature "The Sorcerer's Apprentice," a double reed quartet from the School of Music. The Iowa Graduate Clarinet Quartet will play Feb. 14 and the Maia String Quartet will perform April 25. Other programs will include readings from members of the Writer's Workshop and performances by the Department of Dance.

"This event represents an historic collaboration with the museum and other cultural departments at the UI" said Pamela Trimpe, director of the Old Capitol Museum and the Museum of Natural History. "It's also a fantastic way to break for lunch and escape from the ordinary!"

The Division of Performing Arts -- School of Music, Department of Dance and Department of Theatre Arts -- is part of the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
