Scholz Appointed To Children's Miracle Network Professorship

Thomas Scholz, M.D., professor of pediatrics and director of the Division of Pediatric Cardiology at the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, has been appointed to the Children's Miracle Network Professorship of Pediatric Cardiology.

The professorship is supported by an endowment established with gifts made to Children's Miracle Network at Children's Hospital of Iowa at UI Hospitals and Clinics. Those gifts were directed through the UI Foundation. Scholz is the first faculty member to be appointed to the new professorship.

Scholz, who joined the UI faculty in 1993, provides pediatric heart care at Children's Hospital of Iowa and is an internationally recognized authority in pediatric cardiology. His research accomplishments include helping identify how the heart in a fetus uses energy and is affected by processes and conditions during gestation. More recently, he has focused on understanding fetal cardiovascular responses to maternal stress and how it affects cardiac function and gene expression.

"Dr. Scholz was selected as the Children's Miracle Network Professor of Pediatric Cardiology based on his outstanding record of clinical excellence, teaching and research," said Michael Artman, M.D., UI professor and head of pediatrics and physician-in-chief of Children's Hospital of Iowa. "Tom has dedicated himself to ensuring excellence in pediatric heart care at Children's Hospital of Iowa, and his research is helping us to maintain this leading-edge care."

Scholz earned a medical degree from Washington University School of Medicine. He completed a residency in pediatrics at UI Hospitals and Clinics, a fellowship in pediatric cardiology also at the UI and a research fellowship with the National Institutes of Health.

Children's Hospital of Iowa at UI Hospitals and Clinics is the state's longest-serving children's hospital and is an affiliate of Children's Miracle Network, which raises funds for children's hospitals across North America. The UI acknowledges the UI Foundation as the preferred channel for private contributions that benefit all areas of the university.
