UI Physicians, Volunteer Named 'Heroes'

Two physicians from University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and a leading volunteer at Iowa's only comprehensive academic health center will receive "Healthcare Heroes Awards" during the Corridor HealthCare Summit tomorrow, Tuesday, Feb. 20 in Cedar Rapids.

The honorees include:

-- Laurie Fajardo, M.D., professor and head of the UI Department of Radiology, in the Advancements in Health Care category

-- Ignacio Ponseti, M.D., professor in the UI Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation, in the Physician category

-- Helen Rossi in the Volunteer category

Fajardo is one of the leading researchers in the field of breast imaging and a pioneer in developing new technology to help better detect breast cancer earlier.

Ponseti is recognized worldwide for his innovative, non-surgical treatment for clubfoot and his more than 60 years of contributions to the specialty of orthopaedics.

Rossi played a crucial role in the development of Volunteer Services at UI Hospitals and Clinics. Her devoted and generous support for patients and their families resulted in the Helen K. Rossi Volunteer Guest House being named in her honor.
