Future Educators Can Explore Options At Job Fair Feb. 23

Representatives of school districts ranging from Houston, Texas, to Marshalltown, Iowa, will attend the University of Iowa College of Education's February Job Fair from 1 to 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23, in the Jones Commons on the third floor of the Lindquist Center on the UI campus.

The fair is free for students and alumni. Registration begins at 12:45 p.m. the day of the fair.

New graduates and alumni from the College of Education seeking jobs in 2007 will have the opportunity to connect with recruiters from almost 20 districts in such states as Iowa, Illinois, Nebraska and Texas, as well from the Peace Corps.

"The fair allows our new graduates and alumni to make professional connections with employers from a variety of areas," says Rebecca Anthony, director of the Educational Placement Office in the UI College of Education. "Our graduates can explore their options to find a job that is a good fit."

Anthony adds that the current job market for educators varies greatly by region.

"Some districts are expanding their recruitment efforts, offering signing bonuses, guaranteeing small classes, mentoring and professional development opportunities," Anthony says. "In some locations, there are severe shortages. In other geographic regions, the market remains competitive."

There are currently schools on a waiting list for future job fairs because of the outstanding caliber of educators produced by the college, Anthony says. Employer feedback indicates that UI graduates are viewed as having excellent academic backgrounds and solid field-based training. This fair is one of several organized throughout the spring.

"Our graduates are seen as well-trained professionals who can step into a classroom and make a difference right away," Anthony says.
