'Iowa Writes' Web Project Celebrates Anniversary, Seeks Work By Iowa Writers

To launch its second year of showcasing work by Iowa writers of all experience levels, the "Iowa Writes" project is seeking poems, essays, stories and book excerpts to feature on the University of Iowa Web site, http://www.uiowa.edu, under the "Daily Palette" link.

In the past year, Iowa Writes has used the Web to promote work by 187 Iowa writers, from seasoned authors like Iowa Poet Laureate Robert Dana to relative beginners like Claire Kean, who submitted an essay while a sixth grader at Harding Middle School in Cedar Rapids. Writers have hailed from Davenport, Solon, Eddyville, Indianola, Elkader and dozens of other towns across the state. Former Iowans now residing in other states and countries have also contributed.

Iowa Writes is seeking prose or poetry of 700 words or less, and asks that submissions and questions be sent via email to iowa-writes@uiowa.edu. Writers are also asked to include up to 50 words of biographical information.

Iowa Writes is an expansion of the Daily Palette, which has showcased visual art by Iowans since August 2004. Featured writing is chosen by the editors of The Iowa Review and is posted on a revolving basis with visual arts. The Daily Palette is a research project of the College of Liberal Arts and Science's School of Art and Art History Intermedia Area and the Virtual Writing University Experimental Wing.

Iowa Writes was made possible through a two-year Year of Public Engagement grant. Former University of Iowa President David Skorton declared the 2005-2006 school year the Year of Public Engagement, encouraging the UI community to reach out to the public on local, state, national and international levels. The project also receives support from the Office of the Provost.
