UI cancer specialists team up to fight sarcoma

Specialists with the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Iowa are providing advanced care in a multidisciplinary clinic for patients diagnosed with sarcoma, a type of cancer that appears in the bones and soft tissues.

The clinic brings together a team of specialists in one convenient location for patients. This approach provides enhanced coordination in evaluating patients' tumors, performing biopsies and providing multidisciplinary treatments.

Physicians include: Mohammed Milhem, M.D.; Ray Hohl, M.D.; Joseph Buckwalter, M.D.; John Buatti, M.D.; Ray Tannous, M.D.; George El-Khoury, M.D.; James Howe, M.D.; and Hisakazu Hoshi, M.D.

Palliative care and rehabilitation specialists provide additional support.

Advantages of the clinic for patients include the collaboration of specialties, aggressive treatments, clinical trial offerings and the focus of a dedicated team of specialists.

Patients diagnosed with the disease are often referred for specialized care by their private physicians after a bump, lump or swelling of the arm or leg is noticed.

Recently, the program received designation from the Sarcoma Alliance for Research Through Collaboration (SARC). This designation benefits patients by giving UI specialists access to a wider database of patients for research and greater potential to be involved in clinical trials both nationally and globally. More information is available at http://www.sarctrials.org.

To make an appointment in the Sarcoma Clinic, call 319-356-2324 or 319-356-2353. Referral requests can be faxed to 319-353-8383.

Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center is Iowa's only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated comprehensive cancer center. NCI-designated comprehensive cancer centers are recognized as leaders in developing new approaches to cancer prevention and cancer care, conducting leading-edge research and educating the public about cancer.
