Midwest Bookseller's Association Honors UI Press Book By Iowa City Artist
Claudia McGehee's children's picture book "A Woodland Counting Book," published by the University of Iowa Press, received honorable mention in the 2007 Midwest Booksellers' Choice Awards. Eleven books in five categories were winners or received honorable mention.
The Midwest Booksellers' Choice Awards honor authors from the Midwest Booksellers Association (MBA) region and/or books about the region, which includes the states of Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. The 2007 Midwest Booksellers Choice Awards were selected from books published between May 1, 2006, and April 30, 2007.
They were both nominated and chosen entirely by the knowledgeable booksellers of the more than 240 locally owned and operated independent bookstore members of the Midwest Booksellers Association.
The 2007 awards will be presented formally on Oct. 5, 2007, during the Midwest Booksellers Association's 27th Annual Trade Show in Minneapolis.
McGehee is an Iowa City freelance illustrator who works in scratchboard, and in this book she brings together her interests in animals, the environment, history and archaeology.
Through the illustrations in "A Woodland Counting Book," McGehee takes her readers through all the seasons -- from the delicate lady's-slipper orchid to the barred owls with distinctive hoots and calls to tiny evening bats that roost in hollow trees.
