MEDIA ADVISORY: Medicine, Pharmacy White Coat Ceremonies Aug. 24-25

WHAT: White Coat Ceremonies for incoming University of Iowa medical and pharmacy students

WHEN/WHERE: UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine: 3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24, at Clapp Recital Hall; UI College of Pharmacy: 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, at Clapp Recital Hall

The White Coat Ceremonies at the UI Carver College of Medicine and the UI College of Pharmacy are events welcoming new students to these colleges.

At the UI Carver College of Medicine White Coat Ceremony, UI President Sally Mason and Jean Robillard, dean of the college, will offer remarks. Jane Engeldinger, M.D., clinical professor in the UI Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, will deliver an address to the students titled, "A New Door Opens." Following Engeldinger's speech, the medical students will be ceremonially cloaked with their first white laboratory coats. Then, in the presence of family, friends and faculty, the students will recite the Oath of Hippocrates.

At the UI College of Pharmacy White Coat Ceremony, Jordan Cohen, dean of the college, will address the students. Carl Chalstrom, a 1987 UI pharmacy graduate and president of the UI College of Pharmacy Alumni Board, and Jennifer Moulton, a 1994 UI pharmacy graduate, will offer welcoming remarks. After receiving their white laboratory coats and name badges, the students will recite the Oath of a Pharmacist.
