Teachers Complete Iowa Testing Programs Development Series

A group of 10 high school teachers from eastern Iowa recently completed the University of Iowa College of Education's Iowa Testing Programs first Summer Professional Development Series with the theme "Assessing Core Academic Content." The six-week program, which was held June 20-27, was designed to encourage collaboration between test development specialists and classroom teachers.

Teachers spent time exploring the Iowa Department of Education's Model Core Curriculum Initiative, and then worked with testing experts to develop questions for end-of-course exams in four content areas: math, science, English language arts and social studies. A graduate-level course in assessment and measurement was part of the program, which allowed teachers to learn about and better understand the practice and process of standardized large-scale assessment.

Teachers were selected for the program through an application process that included a statement of interest and references from their administrators and colleagues.

For more information on the series, contact Catherine Welch, professor, UI College of Education Iowa Testing Programs, at 319-335-6274 or mailto:catherine-welch@uiowa.edu.
