University Choir And Women's Chorale Share May 4 Concert At The UI
The University Choir and Women's Chorale from the University of Iowa School of Music will share a free concert at 8 p.m. Friday, May 4, in Clapp Recital Hall on the UI campus.
The concert, under the direction of graduate choral conducting students in the School of Music, will be the final performance of the academic year for both groups.
Conductor of the University Choir is Allyss Haecker. The group is a select, advanced choir of approximately 50 singers, primarily undergraduate students. They present concerts each semester, in addition to participating in combined choral performances with the University Symphony.
For the May 4 concert, the University Choir will perform music representing a wide variety of styles and periods of music, from Italian Baroque motets to African folksongs. Accompanists will be Daniel Mattix and Julia Zelinske, piano and organ. The complete program will be:
-- "Jubiabá" by Carlos Alberto Pinto Fonseca;
-- "Exaltabo te Domine" (I will extol thee) Ps. 30, by Alessandro Scarlatti;
-- "Tantum ergo" (Down in adoration falling) from Four motets on Gregorian themes by Maurice Duruflé;
-- "Cantique de Jean Racine" by Gabriel Fauré;
-- "Timor et Tremor" (Fear and trembling) from Four motets for a time of penitence, by Francis Poulenc;
-- "Hör mein Bitten" (Hear my pleas) by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy;
-- "because of you" by Niel van der Watt;
-- "Siya Lobola," a traditional Swazi folksong; and
-- "Ke nna yo Morena," a traditional Tswana folksong.
"The works for this program were selected because they adhere, either textually or conceptually, to the request for forgiveness," Haecker commented. "The selections are taken from various cultures and historical periods. While some reflect the injustice of a specific society, others are liturgically related to the theme of forgiveness and mercy."
The Women's Chorale is made up of approximately 30 undergraduate women from across the university. The conductor is Marin Jacobson, and the accompanist is Ann DuHamel.
"This is a delightful program of music written specifically for women's voices," Jacobson said. "The program begins with a Baroque 'Magnificat' by Nicola Porpora accompanied by string quartet and organ.
"The music of the second set moves from an elegant Handelian air to the lush Romanticism of Edward Elgar's 'Fly, Singing Bird.' The texts of the compositions in the second set are rich with allusions to the reawakening of spring and love.
"The final set moves from the despair of 'Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child' to a fresh setting of William Blake's 'The Lamb,' to an evocative musical depiction of creation, and a closing love song."
The complete program will be:
-- Porpora's "Magnificat," performed with a student string quintet;
-- "Come, see where golden-hearted spring" by Handel;
-- "Call of the Flowers" by Leo Delibes;
-- "Fly, Singing Bird" by Elgar;
-- the spiritual "Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child," arranged by Michael Neaum;
-- "Little Lamb" by Steven Rickards;
-- "In the Beginning" by Imant Raminsh; and
-- "I will be earth" by Gwyneth Walker.
