MacVey Appointed Director Of UI Division Of Performing Arts

Alan MacVey, professor and chair of the University of Iowa Department of Theatre Arts, has been named director of the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Division of Performing Arts, which comprises Theatre Arts along with the Department of Dance and the School of Music.

The appointment of MacVey, who has been acting director of the DPA since last year, was made by CLAS Dean Linda Maxson.

"I am delighted that Alan McVey will continue to lead the Division of Performing Arts as our permanent director for the next five years," Maxson said. "In this position, his experience as a theater professional and as director of the Department of Theatre Arts will be an asset to the division and to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences."

MacVey joined the UI faculty as chair of the Theatre Arts Department in 1991. In addition to serving as chair, he has continued to direct productions, including last fall's "Into the Woods," one of University Theatres' most popular production in many years. He also developed the Theatre Arts Department's Partnership in the Arts Program, established 15 years ago to bring professional artists to campus in order to develop major new works. The program continues to be very successful, and many of its productions have moved on to other venues.

"In the division I hope to encourage cutting edge new work that crosses disciplinary lines among all the arts," MacVey said. "I share with the faculty and staff a commitment to collaboration; to creating a place where people can take risks, and where they can succeed or fail and learn from their efforts; where people respect the talents and contributions of everyone else; and where there is true passion for the arts.

MacVey is vice president and a member of the Board of Directors of the National Association of Schools of Theatre. During the summer he is artistic director of the Acting Ensemble, an Equity company-in-residence at the Bread Loaf School in Vermont, where he has worked for 31 years. He has served as associate director of the Trinity Repertory Company in Providence Rhode Island, and for 10 years was director of the Program in Theatre and Dance at Princeton University.

He has directed major productions for the Cleveland Playhouse, Trinity Repertory Company, North Light Theatre in Chicago, TheatreWorks in California, the McCarter Theatre, the Shakespeare Theatre at the Folger, the Theatre of the Riverside Church in New York, and many other companies. He is also a playwright whose works have been performed in New York, California, and elsewhere.
