Brennan Named Colloton Associate Professor In Clinical Cardiology

Theresa Brennan, M.D., clinical associate professor of internal medicine in the UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, has been appointed the John W. Colloton Associate Professor in Clinical Cardiology.

The clinical professorship, created by the UI Carver College of Medicine, is named for the former director of UI Hospitals and Clinics. The appointment follows the March 9 announcement of a gift commitment from longtime UI supporter Marvin A. Pomerantz of Des Moines that will eventually establish the John W. Colloton Chair in Cardiovascular Medicine (March 9 news release available online at http://news-releases.uiowa.edu/2007/march/030907pomerantz-gift.html).

Brennan serves as vice chair for clinical programs in the UI Department of Internal Medicine, and she is a cardiologist with UI Heart and Vascular Care at UI Hospitals and Clinics and at the Department of Veterans Affairs Iowa City Health Care System. Brennan's clinical and research interests include cardiovascular care of women, vascular (pertaining to blood vessels) medicine and interventional cardiology, which generally refers to the use of catheters and devices such as balloons and stents to restore blood flow to the heart.

"The Colloton professorship is a tremendous honor for Dr. Brennan, for which she is most deserving," said Paul Rothman, M.D., professor and head of the UI Department of Internal Medicine and the Francois M. Abboud Chair of Medicine. "She is an outstanding clinician, and she is committed to a multidisciplinary, team-oriented approach that ensures the best cardiac care for our patients. I am proud that she has been named to receive this professorship."

Brennan earned a medical degree at the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University. She completed a residency in internal medicine, and fellowships in interventional cardiology and cardiovascular diseases, at UI Hospitals and Clinics. Brennan joined the UI faculty in 2001.
