Photographers Will Discuss Their Work Sept. 26 At UI

Photographers Shana and Robert ParkeHarrison will present a public lecture on their work at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 26, in Room 116 of Art Building West -- the new art building -- on the University of Iowa campus.

The lecture, which is sponsored by the photography area of the School of Art and Art History, will be free.

The wife-and-husband team of Shana and Robert ParkeHarrison collaborate in their work, creating complex images that combine performance, sculpture, photography and painting. Their innovative approach draws upon their use of paper negatives and collage to construct stories of loss and struggle amid landscapes scarred by technology and over-use.

At the heart of these pictorial tales is a lone individual -- ParkeHarrison himself as "Everyman" -- engaged in Herculean struggles with nature and artifice. The world the artists create mirrors our world, where nature is domesticated and controlled.

In actions that are both humorously metaphorical and lyrically poetic, ParkeHarrison constructs beguiling stories that make us consider what we have done or are doing to our earth. The resulting images transcend the familiar world of conventional photographic representation into surreality that resonates with the force of myth.

Their traveling exhibition "The Architects Brother" is currently on view at the Figge Museum in Davenport.
