Speakers Set For Sept. 10 Van Allen Memorial, Flag To Fly At Half-Staff Sept. 7

University of Iowa officials have announced a list of speakers for the 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 10, public memorial service to be held in Hancher Auditorium for Dr. James A. Van Allen, as well as a Thursday, Sept. 7 Old Capitol flag tribute to Dr. Van Allen.

The Sept. 10 memorial service will include remarks by UI Interim President Gary Fethke, UI President Emeritus Sandy Boyd, UI Professors Donald Gurnett and Craig Kletzing, and Van Allen family members Peter Van Allen, Tom Van Allen, and Cynthia Van Allen-Schaffner. Everyone is welcome to attend, and the family will greet attendees following the service. People with special needs for access, seating and auxiliary services should contact Hancher Auditorium at 319-335-1158.

The UI will broadcast the memorial service live on UITV -- channel 17 on Iowa city cable and channel 4 on the UI campus -- and on the Web, where it
can be viewed using Windows Media Player at mms:\\winmedia.uiowa.edu\events. Shortly after the service, the video will be archived and may be viewed at
mms:\\winmedia.uiowa.edu\its\vs\events\vanallenmemorial.wmv.

On Thursday, Sept. 7, the flag atop the Old Capitol will be flown at half-staff in honor of Dr. Van Allen, who died Aug. 9, 2006, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics at the age of 91. He would have celebrated his 92nd birthday Sept. 7.

Thoughts and memories of Dr. Van Allen -- U.S. space pioneer, Regent Distinguished Professor of Physics in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and one of Iowa's most distinguished citizens -- can be shared with the Van Allen family through a special Web page created by Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service of Iowa City.
