UI Dance Marathon Recruiting Dancers

The University of Iowa Dance Marathon, the largest student-run organization on campus, is conducting its dancer registration drive for its 2007 celebration, Feb. 2-3.

"We really want to kick cancer," said Travis Bushaw, executive director of the UI Dancer Marathon.

UI Dance Marathon works in association with the Children's Miracle Network, a fundraising partner to Children's Hospital of Iowa within the UI Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. The UI Dance Marathon is the largest Children's Miracle Network dance marathon in the country and focuses on helping children and families from across the region who are fighting pediatric cancer.

Now in its 13th year, the UI Dance Marathon challenges collegiate and community members to participate in an event that changes their lives and their perspectives. The registration fee of $25 provides a T-shirt for the dancers and helps cover initial costs for the event. In addition, dancers commit to raising $425 to gain access to the dance floor.

The "big event," as UI dance Marathon veterans call it, is a 24-hour dance held at the Iowa Memorial Union. All participants will stay on their feet for duration of UI Dance Marathon, without consuming caffeine or taking naps, in order to show their support for the families receiving treatment at Children's Hospital of Iowa.

All community members are invited to participate in this life-changing event. Student organizations have the opportunity to sponsor a patient to better understand the daily experiences of a child diagnosed with cancer.

"Our motto is 'Dance Marathon is 365 days that can create hope, 24 hours that celebrate the fight, and one power hour that makes a miracle.' That says it all," said Cat Gaa, a veteran of four UI Dance Marathons. "Once you see a child with cancer who is celebrating the moment at the event, you'll never be the same."

Registration forms are available at the Office of Student Life, 145 Iowa Memorial Union. For more information, please visit
