Iowa Law School Foundation Board Elects New Executive Committee, Members
The Iowa Law School Foundation (ILSF) board of directors elected a new executive committee and seven new alumni members at its October 2006 meeting.
Serving on the ILSF Executive Committee for 2006-2007 are: president, Robert E. Bouma of Lake Forest, Ill., who received a J.D. degree from the UI in 1962; vice president, Margaret L. Tobey of Chevy Chase, Md., who received a B.A. degree in 1974 and a J.D. degree in 1980 from the UI; treasurer, Stanley Richards of Des Moines, who received a B.S.C. degree in 1955 and a J.D. degree in 1958 from the UI; and secretary, UI law professor Mark D. Janis of Iowa City.
Bouma is a senior partner in the Chicago office of the law firm of McDermott, Will & Emery L.L.P. As a member of the trial department, he practices primarily in the areas of business litigation and general corporate law.
Tobey is a partner with Morrison Foerster in the Washington, D.C., office, where she has practiced exclusively in the communications law area since 1982.
Richards has worked with General Growth Properties, the nation's second largest owner-developer of regional shopping centers, for more than 40 years.
Janis joined the Iowa faculty in 1995 after six years in private practice specializing in patent prosecution and litigation. In 1999, he was promoted to full professor, and in 2002 he was appointed the H. Blair and Joan V. White Intellectual Property Law Chair. He teaches courses in patents, trademarks/unfair competition and property, as well as seminars on advanced problems in intellectual property.
Newly elected alumni members include Victor M. Alvarez of Miami, Fla.; Monica B. Moen of Boise, Idaho; Frank W. Pechacek Jr. of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Mark W. Putney of Carefree, Ariz.; Timothy Ray of Chicago, Ill.; Deborah M. Tharnish of Des Moines, Iowa; and Robert E. Youle of Evergreen, Colo.
Victor M. Alvarez is a 1983 graduate of the UI College of Law, and he received a B.A. degree from the University of Miami in 1980. He is a partner with White & Case LLP, based in its Miami office, where he has served as the managing partner since 2000.
Monica B. Moen received a J.D. degree in 1997 from the University of Iowa College of Law. She is an attorney with Idaho Power Company, a regulated electric utility involved in the generation, purchase, transmission, distribution and sale of electric energy in a 24,000-square-mile area in southern Idaho and eastern Oregon.
Frank W. Pechacek received a business degree from the University of Northern Iowa in 1966 and a J.D. degree from the UI College of Law in 1969. In 1993, he formed the law firm of Willson & Pechacek, P.L.C., in Council Bluffs where he practices primarily in the fields of corporate law, tax, trusts and estates.
Mark W. Putney received a B.A. degree in political science in 1951 and a J.D. degree in 1957 from the University of Iowa. He joined Iowa Power and Light Company (now MidAmerican Energy Company) in 1972 as vice president and general counsel and served as chairman and chief executive officer of the utility holding company from 1984 until his retirement in 1992.
A 1994 graduate of the UI College of Law, Timothy Ray is a partner in the Chicago-based law firm Neal, Gerber & Eisenberg LLP's litigation practice group, where he concentrates in complex commercial litigation.
Deborah M. Tharnish is a 1980 graduate of the UI College of Law and a shareholder with Davis, Brown, Koehn, Shors & Roberts, P.C., where she has practiced since 1980.
Robert E. Youle, who received a J.D. degree from the UI College of Law in 1976, is an Equity Member in the Denver, Colo., office of Sherman & Howard, LLC, where he practices in the areas of antitrust and complex commercial litigation.
Professor Eric G. Andersen of Iowa City, who was elected by the college's faculty to represent them on the board, received a B.A. degree in 1974 and a J.D. degree in 1977 from Brigham Young University. He joined the UI law faculty in 1984 and teaches courses in contract law and family law. He also has taught Roman law and law related to child abuse and neglect. He served as associate dean of the college from 1999 to 2006.
The ILSF board elected Carroll J. Reasoner of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, a Lifetime Honorary Member. Reasoner received a B.A. degree from the UI in 1973 and a J.D. degree from the UI College of Law in 1976, and served as chair of the University of Iowa Foundation board of directors from 2000 to 2003. Also elected Lifetime Honorary Members are Joan U. Axel of Muscatine, Iowa, who received a J.D. degree from the UI in 1981, and Sheldon F. Kurtz of Iowa City, who has taught in the law school since 1973.
