Nov. 1 Event To Mark 15th Anniversary Of UI Campus Shootings
The victims of the 1991 shootings on the University of Iowa campus will be remembered on the 15th anniversary of their deaths at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 1 on the T. Ann Cleary Walkway. For a map of the location, visit http://www.uiowa.edu/%7Emaps/c/cleary1.htm.
Weather permitting, the commemorative event will take place at the speakers platform on the Cleary Walkway, which was named in honor of one of the victims in the shooting. Speakers at the event will include:
-- The Rev. Jason Chen on behalf of the pastoral community in Iowa City. Chen served as a minister to students at the time of the shootings;
-- Ann Rhodes, now a clinical faculty member in the College of Medicine and at the time of the shootings the UI vice president for university relations;
-- Professor Emeritus George Knorr of the Department of Physics and Astronomy;
-- Professor Rex Honey of the Department of Geography
The afternoon of Nov. 1, 1991, a disgruntled, former graduate student shot and killed three faculty members in the Department of Physics and Astronomy and another recent graduate before walking to Jessup Hall, where he killed a university administrator and seriously injured a student worker before taking his own life.
The victims, who will all be honored Wednesday, are:
-- Dr. T. Anne Cleary, vice president for academic affairs and professor in the College of Education
-- Dr. Dwight Nicholson, chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy
-- Dr. Christoph Goertz, professor of physics and astronomy
-- Dr. Robert Smith, professor of physics and astronomy
-- Dr. Shan Linhua, research associate in the Department of Physics and Astronomy
-- Miya Sioson, at the time an undergraduate student in the Department of Geography and a temporary office staff employee in the Office of the Provost
Sioson suffered disabling injuries, and the others died from their injuries.
