Davis Appointed To Keettel Chair

William Davis, M.D., clinical associate professor in obstetrics and gynecology in the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, has been named to the Dr. William C. Keettel Chair.

The chair is supported by an endowment established with gifts made through the UI Foundation primarily by medical residents trained by Keettel, who joined the UI faculty in 1949 and served as head of the UI Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology from 1959 to 1977. Keettel became an emeritus professor in 1980 and passed away in 1981.

Davis joined the UI faculty in 1999, after nearly 25 years of private practice in Cedar Rapids. Even while in private practice, he earned honors for training medical residents. Davis also has been instrumental in increasing the amount of laparoscopic surgery training for obstetrics and gynecology residents, in addition to using this advanced type of surgery to treat patients under his care. His research areas include osteoporosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome and methods of inducing ovulation.

"Dr. Davis is an excellent teacher, who last year won the National Faculty Award for Teaching Excellence. This commitment to education, along with his other accomplishments, make him a fine selection for the chair in Dr. Keettel's name," said Jennifer Niebyl, M.D., professor and head of obstetrics and gynecology.

Davis earned a medical degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine. At the University of Iowa, he subsequently completed an internship in surgery, a residency in obstetrics and gynecology and a fellowship in reproductive endocrinology. He first served patients as a flight surgeon.
