Business College Honors Alumnus With International Business Leadership Award

The University of Iowa Henry B. Tippie College of Business will honor Dr. Eden Y. Woon, Starbucks Coffee Company's vice president for Greater China, as the recipient of the college's first International Business Leadership Award.

"We are proud to honor Woon and recognize his outstanding leadership in developing international relationships between Asia and the United Sates throughout his career," said William C. "Curt" Hunter, dean of the Tippie College of Business. Woon will be honored at a luncheon starting at 1:15 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, at the Conrad Hotel in Hong Kong.

Originally from Shanghai, Woon moved with his family to Hong Kong as a child and later came to the United States for college, earning a B.S. in mathematics from the University of Iowa and a Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Washington. He became a professor of mathematics at the U.S. Air Force Academy before being assigned to the U.S. Embassy in Beijing in 1983, where he played a role in developing cooperative programs involving the U.S. and Chinese militaries.

After his two-year assignment in Beijing, Woon became the China policy adviser for the Office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, advising on military relations with China, and then joined the Office of the Secretary of Defense as its China adviser.

After retiring from the Air Force as a colonel and completing one additional year advising the Pentagon, Woon became executive director of the Washington State China Relations Council and, in 1997, CEO of the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce, the oldest and largest business organization in Hong Kong, with about 4,000 corporate members. His career with the chamber included many accomplishments including selection as director of the year in Hong Kong in the non-profit category in 2001.

Woon has held board positions with such organizations as the Hong Kong Articles Numbering Association, Tradelink Electronic Commerce, the Hong Kong Tennis Foundation, Hong Kong Design Centre Ltd., the Hong Kong Government's Investment Promotion Strategy Group and the Advisory Committee of the Securities and Futures Commission.

In 2006, Woon joined Starbuck's as vice president, Greater China, based in Shanghai. He is currently on the Board of Ocean Park and on the Mainland-Hong Kong Economic Cooperation Subcommittee of the Hong Kong Government's Strategic Development Commission, and is a justice of peace of Hong Kong.

The International Business Leadership Award was established to recognize career accomplishment in the world of business, specifically career achievement made outside of the United States, acknowledge the individual's connection to the University of Iowa, and/ or service to the University. The award will be given as designated by the dean of the Tippie College of Business no more than once each year.
