UI Department of Internal Medicine Presents Benefit Piano Recital Oct. 18

Ihab Hassan, M.D., a second-year resident in internal medicine at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, will perform a piano recital Oct. 18 to benefit the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in Lebanon.

The recital will begin at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18, in Harper Hall of the UI Voxman Music Building. Hassan will perform works by Beethoven, Chopin and Liszt. The Department of Internal Medicine in the UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine will host the event.

Hassan holds a bachelor's degree in chemistry and a medical degree from American University of Beirut.

Hassan, originally from Lebanon, has played the piano since age 8 and began studying seriously under Zvart Sarkissian, a graduate of the Marguerite Long School of Music in Paris. Sarkissian has taught well-known pianists including Abdel Rahman El Bacha, Walid Akel and Walid Hourani.

Since 1999 Hassan has participated in all of Sarkissian's annual student recitals. He performed in two chamber music concerts at the Assembly Hall of American University of Beirut in 2003 and 2004. Hassan also gave a recital on World AIDS Day in December 2003 that benefited AIDS patients in need. His last solo piano recital was in Beirut in April 2005, presented by the medical chapter of American University of Beirut Alumni Association.
