MidAmerican Holdings Head To Speak At UI

David Sokol, chairman and CEO of MidAmerican Energy Holdings, will speak at the University of Iowa at 3:55 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 17, in room W10 of the Pappajohn Business Building. Admission to the speech, which is part of the Tippie College of Business' Pearson Lecture Series, is free and open to the public.

Sokol joined MidAmerican in February 1991 as chairman, president and chief executive officer. At that time the company owned and operated one geothermal power project, which it had developed and constructed. Today, the company has grown into a thriving worldwide energy services provider with 17,800 employees and annual revenues of approximately $10.4 billion.

Through its utility subsidiaries, MidAmerican Energy and PacifiCorp in the United States and Northern Electric and Yorkshire Electricity in the United Kingdom, the company provides electric and natural gas service to approximately 6.7 million customers. Through CalEnergy, the company's independent power production business, and the utility operations of MidAmerican Energy and PacifiCorp, MidAmerican manages and owns interests in approximately 17,800 megawatts of diversified power generation facilities, 15 percent of which is from renewable resources such as geothermal and wind.

MidAmerican is also a leading owner of interstate natural gas pipeline systems in the United States through its holdings, Kern River Gas Transmission Co. and Northern Natural Gas Co. These companies deliver approximately 8 percent of the average daily volume of natural gas in North America through their combined 18,100 miles of pipeline.

A native of Omaha, Sokol earned his bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

The Pearson Lecture Series is designed to bring distinguished national business and academic leaders to the University of Iowa campus to speak to business students, staff, and faculty.  The series is funded by Pearson in support of business education and academic excellence at the University's Tippie College of Business.
