Scott, Lehnertz To Give Presentation On Campus Architecture Oct. 12

John Scott, Elizabeth M. Stanley Professor of the Arts at the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and architect Rodney Lehnertz, director of campus and facilities planning at the UI, will give a virtual tour of the UI's diverse architecture from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12 in the Old Capitol Museum's Senate Chamber.

Using photographs, personal reflections, and historical information, Scott and Lehnertz will take the audience through over 70 campus buildings. They will highlight architecturally significant structures, from the Greek Revival style of Old Capitol, to the recently renovated Kinnick Stadium, built in 1920s, to structures like the Medical Education and Biomedical Research Facility and new Art Building West. The talk will also showcase significant sculptures on campus.

Scott and Lehnertz's lecture is based on their new book, "The University of Iowa Guide to Campus Architecture," published by University of Iowa Press in September 2006. A book signing will follow the talk.

In this first comprehensive guide to the university's architecture, Scott and Lehnertz "reveal the artistic integrity, intellectual inspiration, and cutting-edge function of the campus buildings," says the UI Press. Scott and Lehnertz highlight 78 buildings that they consider architecturally significant in the book.

Their talk is part of the Pentacrest Lecture Series-a series of discussions hosted by Old Capitol and the Museum of Natural History, and tied to the subject matter of each museum. "Architecture enthusiasts of all ages and levels of knowledge will certainly enjoy this presentation," said Elisa Ewing, Old Capitol's education and outreach coordinator.
