Science Fiction Writer Link Reads Oct. 17 On 'Live From Prairie Lights'

Horror and science fiction writer Kelly Link will read from her book of stories, "Magic for Beginners," just out in paperback, at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 17, in the Prairie Lights bookstore at 15 S. Dubuque St. in downtown Iowa City.

The "Live from Prairie Lights" reading, hosted by Julie Englander, will be broadcast on University of Iowa radio station WSUI, AM 910. Listen on the Internet at wsui.uiowa.edu.

A starred review in Publishers Weekly stated, "The nine stories in Link's second collection are the spitting image of those in her acclaimed debut, 'Stranger Things Happen': effervescent blends of quirky humor and pathos that transform stock themes of genre fiction into the stuff of delicate lyrical fantasy. . . . Not only does Link find fresh perspectives from which to explore familiar premises, she also forges ingenious connections between disparate images and narrative approaches to suggest a convincing alternate logic that shapes the worlds of her highly original fantasies."

Link's debut collection was a Firecracker nominee, a Village Voice Favorite Book and a Salon Book of the Year. In its hardcover release, "Magic for Beginners" was selected for best of the year lists by Time Magazine, Salon, Boldtype, the Village Voice, the San Francisco Chronicle and the Capitol Times. It was a Book Sense pick and a Best of Book Sense pick for 2005.
