UI Latin Jazz Ensemble Will Feature Guitarist Grismore Nov. 16

The Latin Jazz Ensemble from the University of Iowa School of Music will present a free concert at 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, in Harper Hall of the UI Voxman Music Building.

One of a dozen groups in the UI jazz program, the Latin jazz Ensemble is directed by James Dreier. The Nov. 16 concert will feature guitarist Steve Grismore and a wide variety of Latin and jazz styles. Both Grismore and Dreier are members of the jazz faculty.

The program will include pieces by Paquito D'Rivera, Jesus "Chucho" Valdes, Manny Oqendo, Robert Washut and Ray Barretto.

Dreier is a drumset, Latin percussion and jazz educator, clinician and performer. He teaches in the jazz area at the University of Iowa School of Music, where he co-leads the UI Afro-Cuban Drum and Dance Ensemble and directs the Latin Jazz Ensemble. Grismore is a co-founder of the Iowa City Jazz Festival and has been musical director of the festival for 12 years. He has performed at clubs and jazz festivals around the country and played with many well-known jazz artists, including Paul Smoker, Charlie Haden, Bobby Shew, Carla Bley and Vinny Golia. He has been a part of many local jazz groups including Oddbar, the Orquestra de Jazz y Salsa Alto Maiz and the Grismore/Sizemore Band. For more, see: www.uiowa.edu/~music/bios/JAZZgrismore.htm
