Schneider Appointed DEO Of UI Prosthodontics Department
Galen Schneider, D.D.S., Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Prosthodontics in the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and Dows Institute for Dental Research, has been appointed department executive officer of prosthodontics, effective July 3.
Schneider succeeds Steve Aquilino, D.D.S., UI professor of prosthodontics, who has served as DEO since July 2000.
Schneider received a bachelor of science degree from the UI in 1987 and a doctor of dental surgery degree from the UI College of Dentistry in 1991. Following graduation, he completed dentist-scientist training at the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry in 1996, where he received a certificate in prosthodontics and a doctorate in cell biology.
He completed several postdoctoral fellowships at both North Carolina and Iowa. Schneider has taught extensively at the predoctoral and postdoctoral levels, published widely and provided many years of service, including patient care, to the College of Dentistry and UI.
Schneider's research laboratory focuses on cell biology as it relates to implant osseointegration, which is the direct structural and functional connection between living bone and the surface of an implant, as well as osseous tissue engineering. The lab is supported by the National Institutes of Health.
He also is a section editor for the Basic Science Research section for the Journal of Prosthodontics and serves as an ad hoc reviewer for numerous other journals. In addition, Schneider provides patient care in the intramural practice of the Department of Prosthodontics.
