Local UI Student Elected To Phi Beta Kappa Membership

A group of 92 University of Iowa undergraduates was initiated into Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences on Sunday, April 30.

Two students were elected using the "junior standard," which requires students to have completed a minimum 80 semester hours of UI coursework, with a minimum 3.90 UI and cumulative grade point averages. In the list below, ** indicates election as a junior. The other 90 students were elected using the "senior standard," which requires students to have completed a minimum 100 semester hours of college coursework (with at least 60 hours at the UI), with a minimum 3.80 UI and cumulative grade point averages. All students elected to membership have satisfied the General Education--Foreign Language requirement for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Phi Beta Kappa was founded in 1776, at the College of William and Mary in Virginia. More than 15,000 new members are elected each year from 262 chapters across the United States.

Students are listed alphabetically according to hometown with Iowa hometowns listed first. (** indicates election as a junior)

ALGONA: Derrick D. Fenchel of Algona, a junior studying exercise science with a minor in psychology in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Fenchel is a 2003 graduate of Algona High School and the son of David and Diane Fenchel.

ALTOONA: Jessica Fox of Altoona, a senior studying athletic training in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Fox is a 2002 graduate of Southeast Polk High School and the daughter of Dan and Bonnie Fox of 1302 4th Ave SE in Altoona.

AMES: Evan Herrnstadt of Ames, a senior studying economics and political science with a minor in mathematics in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts andSciences, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Herrnstadt is a 2002 graduate of Ames High School and the son of Mary and Steven Herrnstadt.

AMES: Sara Pfeiffer of Ames, a May 2006 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a bachelor's degree in political science with a minor in history was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Pfeiffer is a 2002 graduate of Ames High School and the daughter of Richard and Delora Pfeiffer.

ANKENY: Liz Damstetter of Ankeny, a May 2006 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a bachelor's degree in psychology, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Damstetter is a 2002 graduate of Ankeny High School and the daughter of Bob & Laura Damstetter of 505 NW Boulder Brook Drive in Ankeny.

BETTENDORF: Lauren Coyne of Bettendorf, a May 2006 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a bachelor's degree in biology, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Coyne is a 2002 graduate of Assumption High School and the daughter of Edmund and Bernadette Coyne.

BETTENDORF: Megan Tedell of Bettendorf, IA, a December 2005 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a bachelor's degree in English and psychology, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Tedell is a 2002 graduate of Moline High School in Moline, Ill. and the daughter of Robert and Janis Tedell of Bettendorf.

BUFFALO CENTER: Kelly Ruth Anderson of Buffalo Center, a May 2006 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a bachelor's degree in English and journalism and mass communication, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Anderson is a 2002 graduate of North Iowa High School and the daughter of Bob and Connie Anderson.

CEDAR RAPIDS: Violet Lucca of Cedar Rapids, a junior studying cinema, psychology and Spanish in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Lucca is a 2003 graduate of Washington High School and the daughter of Penny Lucca.

CLIVE: Bridget Eileen McIlhon of Clive, a May 2006 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Education with a bachelor's degree in elementary education with reading and early childhood education endorsements, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. McIlhon is a 2002 graduate of Dowling Catholic High School and the daughter of Tom and Linda McIlhon of 2082 NW 145 St. in Clive.

CORALVILLE: Brett Gregory Johnson of Coralville, a May 2006 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a bachelor's degree in Spanish and religious studies, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Johnson is a 2002 graduate of Iowa City West High School and the son of Kim and Greg Johnson.

CORALVILLE: Kelly Mellecker of Coralville, a May 2006 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a bachelor's degree in environmental politics and psychology and a minor in Spanish, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Mellecker is a 2002 graduate of Iowa City West High School and the daughter of Dave and Margaret Mellecker.

CORWITH: Kelly Shipman of Corwith, a senior studying dance and health promotion in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Shipman is a 2002 graduate of Corwith-Wesley-LuVerne High School and the daughter of Mark and Eloise Shipman of Corwith.

CRESCO: Todd Rosendahl of Cresco, a senior studying music education and percussion performance in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Rosendahl is a 2002 graduate of Crestwood High School and the son of Harold and Marlys Rosendahl.

DAVENPORT: Gavin Ferguson of Davenport, a May 2006 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a bachelor's degree in mathematics and Asian languages and literature, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. DES MOINES: Elizabeth Albright of Des Moines, a May 2006 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a bachelor's degree in English and women's studies, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Albright is a 2002 graduate of Des Moines Hoover High School and the daughter of Curt and Lynne Albright of 5756 NW 93rd St in Johnston.

DES MOINES: Jonathan Heggen of Des Moines, a May 2006 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a bachelor's degree in philosophy with a minor in religious studies, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. DES MOINES: Hailyn Nielsen of Des Moines, a May 2005 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a bachelor's degree in microbiology with minors in computer science and Spanish, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. DUBUQUE: Julie Lynn Arensdorf of Dubuque, a May 2006 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a bachelor's degree in English with minors in Spanish and history, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Arensdorf is a 2002 graduate of Wahlert High School and the daughter of Sandy Mathis and Garry Arensdorf of Dubuque.

DYERSVILLE: Jennifer Heacock of Dyersville, a junior studying biochemistry, Spanish, and music, with a minor in chemistry in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Heacock is a 2003 graduate of Western Dubuque High School and the daughter of Clarence and Cindy Heacock.

FARRAGUT: Maeve Elizabeth Carey of Farragut, a May 2006 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a bachelor's degree in psychology with minors in sociology and French, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Carey is a 2002 graduate of Farragut Community School and the daughter of Michael and Kelly Carey.

FONDA: Gary Hammen of Fonda, a May 2006 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a bachelor's degree in biochemistry, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Hammen is a 1999 graduate of Newell-Fonda High School and the son of Kate and Jerry Hammen.

GARNER: Shelby Jo Hayes of Garner, a May 2006 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a bachelor's degree in English, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Hayes is a 2002 graduate of Garner-Hayfield High School and the daughter of Doug and Jaci Hayes.

GLADBROOK: Jessica Ruelle Reese of Gladbrook, a May 2006 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a bachelor's degree in journalism & mass Communication, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Reese is a 2001 graduate of Gladbrook-Reinbeck High School and the daughter of Barry and Kayla Reese of Gladbrook.

Goddard is a 2002 graduate of Iowa City West High School and the daughter of Carolyn and Bruce Goddard.

PAULLINA: Leah Lundquist of Paullina, a May 2006 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and College of Nursing with a bachelor's degree in psychology and nursing, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Lundquist is a 2002 graduate of South O'Brien High School and the daughter of Kent and Laura Lundquist.

PELLA: Jonathan Landon of Pella, a May 2006 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a bachelor's degree in economics and philosophy, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Landon is a 2002 graduate of Pella Community High School and the son of Dave and Kay Landon.

PERRY: Alissa Whitmore of Perry, a May 2006 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a bachelor's degree in anthropology and classics, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Whitmore is a 2002 graduate of Perry High School and the daughter of Roxanne and Darren Whitmore.

REMSEN: Abby Arens of Remsen, a May 2006 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a bachelor's degree in speech and hearing Science, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Arens is a 2002 graduate of Remsen St. Mary's High School and the daughter of Joe and Betty Arens of Remsen.

STORY CITY: Katie Weigel of Story City, a May 2006 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a bachelor's degree in Russian and Communication Studies, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Weigel is a 2002 graduate of Roland-Story High School and the daughter of Hugh and Donna Weigel.

LaBua is the daughter of the late Mary Lois LaBua, formerly of Monmouth, Ill.

WEST DES MOINES: Ashley Tousley of West Des Moines, a May 2006 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a bachelor's degree in psychology and Spanish, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Tousley is a 2002 graduate of Valley High School and the daughter of Mike and Vickie Tousley of 421 S 49th Street, West Des Moines.

DOWNERS GROVE: Dianne Harrop of Downers Grove, Ill., a May 2006 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a bachelor's degree in art and Asian languages and literature, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. PEORIA: Samuel Plott of Peoria, Ill., a May 2006 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a bachelor's degree in religious studies and Asian languages and literature was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. LONG LAKE: Joseph Otto Mrkonich of Long Lake, Minn., a May 2006 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a bachelor's degree in literature, science, and the arts, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Mrkonich is a 2002 graduate of Orono High School and the son of Marko and Robann Mrkonich.

MADISON: Rachel Wise of Madison, Wis., a senior studying dance and exercise science in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Wise is a 2003 graduate of Edgewood High School and the daughter of James and Linda Wise.
