UI World Dance Concert II Features Dancers From Around The Globe

The University of Iowa Department of Dance will present World Dance Concert II, featuring dance and dancers from around the globe, at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, March 30 through April 1, in the Space/Place Theatre of UI North Hall. Included will be Latin, African, Indian, Chinese and Middle Eastern dance styles.

World Dance Concert I was presented at the Englert Theater during the regional American College Dance Festival, hosted by the UI, and featured performances by college and university dance programs throughout the Midwest. World Dance Concert II consists entirely of Iowa-based performers, including natives of Ghana, India, Panama, Puerto Rico, Equador, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, Colombia, China and the United States.

Dance styles will include mambo, Indian Kachipudi, Afro-Cuban Candela, Puerto Rican Bomba, Venezuelan Tambor, Peruvian Festejo, Brazilian Capoeira, Colombian Bullerenque and Egyptian "Dance Orientale."

The World Dance concert will feature the debut of the Iowa Afro Latin Project and performances by UI dance alumna Marie Sage's Kahraman ensemble, which specializes in Middle Eastern dance; dance graduate student Zhang Huiying from China; graduate student Chitra Akkoor from India; and an ensemble organized by UI Office of University Relations staff member Modei Akyea from Ghana.

The Dance Department is a unit of the Division of Performing Arts in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Tickets are $12 (UI student $6; Free admission for children under 12).

Tickets may be purchased in advance from the University Box Office in the Iowa Memorial Union. In addition to window sales at the Iowa Memorial Union, the University Box Office may be reached by phone at 319-335-3041 or toll-free 800-346-4401. The fax number is 319-335-3407. Hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 5-9 p.m. Sunday. In addition to cash and checks, the University Box Office accepts MasterCard, Visa, American Express and Discover cards.

Any remaining tickets will be on sale at the door.

North Hall is located at the north end of Madison Street on the UI campus. It is accessible from both Madison Street and the Anne Cleary Walk. Parking is available in the North Campus Parking Ramp.
