UI Nonprofit Center Meetings To Educate About New State Guidelines

The Larned A. Waterman Iowa Nonprofit Resource Center at the University of Iowa College of Law will host a series of workshops around Iowa this summer to help the staff and board members of nonprofit organizations understand new state guidelines to assure efficient and effective service to the public.

Meetings will be held this June in Davenport, Dubuque, Waterloo, Cedar Rapids, Des Moines, Council Bluffs and Sioux City. Dates and locations will be announced later.

The new guidelines, "Iowa Principles and Practices for Charitable Nonprofit Excellence," were released in February by Secretary of State Chet Culver. The new guide will assist non-profit organizations in management practices, ethical conduct and public accountability.

The new revisions are based on recommendations made in 2005 by a task force appointed by Gov. Tom Vilsack to assess the role of charitable nonprofits in Iowa. The task force, chaired by Willard "Sandy" Boyd, UI law professor and director of the Waterman Nonprofit Center, heard testimony at public meetings around the state, and individual task force members sought opinions in their own communities.

The task force recommendations were focused particularly in the areas of improving the management effectiveness and governance of nonprofit organizations, making Iowans more aware of nonprofits and their role in building a community and improving the economy, and encouraging Iowans to donate more money and time to nonprofits. The report also encourages greater cooperation between the business, government and nonprofit sectors.

"We need to recognize the vital role that our charitable nonprofit organizations play in the social and economic vitality of our communities," said Boyd. "We, as citizens, need to carry on the great American tradition of supporting them through the contribution of our time as volunteers and our financial wherewithal."

Electronic versions of the guide are available at the Iowa Secretary of State's Web site at
