UI Libraries Co-sponsors State Cultural Materials Preservation Training

The University of Iowa Libraries and the Iowa Conservation and Preservation Consortium (ICPC) will conduct a pair of preservation seminars to help people preserve their cultural and historical artifacts on March 15 and April 5 from 2 to 5 p.m. via the Iowa Communications Network.

The preservation sessions are designed for archivists, conservators, county clerks, curators, genealogists, librarians, museum workers, registrars, volunteers and anyone who cares about conserving and preserving our material heritage. The sessions are open to the public. Admission for each session is $15 for an ICPC member, $20 for a non-member.

Topics of the March 15 meeting include interpreting photographs, book repair, and an overview of digitizing photographs. The April 5 session will cover care, handling, and storage of textiles, care of photographs and an opportunity to ask the experts questions pertinent to individual needs. Instructors include UI Libraries Preservation Librarian Nancy E. Kraft, UI Libraries Conservator Gary Frost and historian Loren Horton.

The Iowa Conservation and Preservation Consortium (ICPC) is a membership organization seeking to initiate, encourage and enhance preservation and conservation activities by providing basic preservation education and training. Funding for the 2006 preservation training program was partially supported through funding from the Resource Enhancement and Protection (REAP) act through a Historical Resource Development Program (REAP/HRDP) grant from the State Historical Society of Iowa.
