Local UI Students Win Scholarship For Study Abroad

The University of Iowa Office for Study Abroad has awarded 20 scholarships for summer and short-term study abroad. UI undergraduate and graduate students from diverse disciplines, ranging from international studies to economics, are spending time overseas.

There were 20 recipients of the $1,000 Summer and Short-Term Scholarships: Srinivas Akella, Marina Aldrich, Julianna Binns, Vincent Calabrese, Afton Erick, Colleen Gallagher, Megan Jespersen, Brett Johnson, Ivan Kling, Claire Miller, Jamie Nelson, Gina Petersen, Ashley Pool, Amanda Seals, Elithet Silva-Martínez, Rachael Todt, Terra Wallin, Alissa Whitmore, Whitney Wright and Kai Zhang.

The Office for Study Abroad is part of UI International Programs, which consists of a number of offices, centers, degree programs, academic programs, research projects, and services. Organized under the associate provost and dean of international programs, these units serve to further internationalize the campus and community and promote global scholarship, research and teaching.

The recipients of the semester-long study abroad scholarships and summer and short-term study abroad scholarship are listed below alphabetically by hometown with Iowa recipients first:

Iowa

AMES: Claire Miller, a University of Iowa sophomore majoring in history and English, has been awarded a $1,000 Summer & Study Abroad Scholarship. Miller will participate in the UI program at Tianjin University of Technology in China.

BATAVIA: Whitney Wright, a University of Iowa sophomore majoring in visual journalism and art, has been awarded a $1,000 Summer & Short-Term Study Abroad Scholarship. Wright will participate in the Iowa Regents Summer Hispanic Institute in Valladolid, Spain.

BETTENDORF: Ashley Pool, a University of Iowa senior majoring in nursing, has been awarded a Summer & Short-Term Scholarship. Pool will participate in the UI program at The Livia Benini Foundation in Florence, Italy.

BETTENDORF: Terra Wallin, a University of Iowa sophomore majoring in accounting and political science, has been awarded a $1,000 Summer & Short-Term Scholarship. Wallin will participate in the UI-sponsored international business program in Turin, Italy.

CAMANCHE: Gina Petersen, a University of Iowa junior majoring in English, has been awarded a $1,000 Summer & Short-Term Scholarship. Petersen will participate in the UI Irish Writing Program in Dublin, Ireland.

CEDAR RAPIDS: Julianna Binns, a University of Iowa senior majoring in social work and Spanish, was awarded a $1,000 Summer & Short-term Study Abroad Scholarship. Binns will participate in the UI-sponsored program in Lake Atilan, Guatemala.

CHARLES CITY: Megan Jespersen, a UI junior majoring in international studies and global health studies, has been awarded a $1,000 Summer & Short-Term Scholarship. Jespersen will participate in the UNI Institute of Humanities and Fine Arts program in St. Petersburg, Russia.

CORALVILLE: Brett Johnson, a University of Iowa senior majoring in Spanish and religious studies, has been awarded a $1,000 Summer & Short-Term Scholarship. He will participate in the Iowa Summer Study Abroad Program in Salvador, Brazil.

DES MOINES: Ivan Kling, a University of Iowa senior majoring in Asian language and Japanese literature, was awarded a $1,000 Summer & Short-Term Study Abroad Scholarship. He will participate in the Portland State University-sponsored Waseda Oregon Summer Japanese Program in Tokyo, Japan.

DES MOINES: Jamie Nelson, a University of Iowa junior majoring in international studies, was awarded a $1,000 Summer & Short-Term Scholarship. She will participate in the Iowa Regents program in Valladolid, Spain.

DICKENS: Afton Erick, a University of Iowa senior majoring in Spanish and dental hygiene, was awarded a $1,000 Summer & Short-Term Scholarship. Erick will participate in the UI-sponsored health, nutrition and environment program in the Dominican Republic.

IOWA CITY: Srinivas Akella, a University of Iowa junior majoring in economics, was awarded a $1,000 Summer & Short-Term Study Abroad Scholarship. Akella will participate in the UI-sponsored program at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Durban, South Africa.

IOWA CITY: Amanda Seals, a University of Iowa junior majoring in Japanese and international studies, was awarded a $1,000 Summer & Short-Term Study Abroad Scholarship. Seals will participate in the Portland State University-sponsored Waseda Oregon Summer Japanese Program in Tokyo, Japan.

IOWA CITY: Rachael Todt, a University of Iowa junior majoring in international studies, was awarded a $1,000 Summer & Short-Term Study Abroad Scholarship. Todt will participate in the Iowa Regents program in Valladolid, Spain.

IOWA CITY: Kai Zhang, a University of Iowa senior majoring in environmental science, was awarded a $1,000 Summer & Short-Term Study Abroad Scholarship. Zhang will participate in the Iowa Regents program in Lyon, France.

PERRY: Alissa Whitmore, a University of Iowa senior majoring in anthropology and classics, was awarded a $1,000 Summer & Short-Term Study Abroad Scholarship. Whitmore will participate in the UI archaeological fieldwork program in Nijmegen, Netherlands.

WATERLOO: Marina Aldrich, a University of Iowa senior majoring in nursing, was awarded a $1,000 Summer & Short-Term Study Abroad Scholarship. Aldrich will participate in the Iowa Regents program in Lyon, France.

Illinois

POPLER GROVE: Vincent Calabrese, a University of Iowa junior majoring in international studies, was awarded a $1,000 Summer & Short-Term Study Abroad Scholarship. Calabrese will participate in the School for Field Studies-sponsored program in Costa Rica.

Tennessee

WHITE PINE: Colleen Gallagher, a University of Iowa senior majoring in nursing and global health, was awarded a $1,000 Summer & Short-Term Study Abroad Scholarship. Gallagher will participate in the UI-sponsored nursing program in St. Lucia.

Peru

YUACO: Elithet Silvia-Martínez, a University of Iowa graduate student in social work and sociology, was awarded a $1,000 Summer & Short-Term Study Abroad Scholarship. She will participate in the UI social work program in Patzcuaro, Mexico.
