UI Graduates Create Endowed Football Scholarship At Iowa

University of Iowa alumni Terry Mulligan, an Iowa Hawkeye football letterwinner, and Susan Mulligan have given $125,000 to the University of Iowa Foundation to establish an endowed scholarship for the UI football team.

The Terry and Susan Mulligan Football Scholarship will enable a deserving student-athlete to attend the UI each year, with preference given to business majors.

UI Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Bob Bowlsby said the Mulligans' gift is a demonstration of the lifelong loyalty of UI student-athletes.

"When Terry Mulligan wore the Hawkeye uniform in the 1960s, he gave his all to his team and his university," Bowlsby said. "With this gift, in addition to Terry's other extensive service as an alumnus, he and Susan have shown that their commitment to their alma mater is as strong as ever. We are extremely grateful for the Mulligans' generosity."

UI football head coach Kirk Ferentz echoed Bowlsby's comments.

"Terry and Susan's faith in our program will benefit Hawkeye student-athletes for generations," Ferentz said. "The Mulligan Scholarship will help the UI stay competitive with the nation's top programs."

The Mulligans live in Bonita Springs, Fla., and Lake Forest, Ill. Susan Mulligan earned a bachelor's degree in political science from the UI in 1967. Terry Mulligan, who retired in 1996 as group vice president of medical-supplies company Baxter International, earned a bachelor of science degree in secondary education from the university in 1968. He is now vice chairman of MedAssets, a company providing services to healthcare providers worldwide.

Terry Mulligan played defensive end for the Iowa Hawkeye football team, lettering in 1964, 1965 and 1966. He was an assistant coach for the UI freshman football team in 1967. The UI presented him with the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2001, and he served on the UI Alumni Association's board of directors for seven years, including two as chairman. He is a member of the UI Henry B. Tippie College of Business board of visitors, and both he and Susan Mulligan are members of The Presidents Club, which recognizes the UI's most generous contributors.

The Mulligans' UI family ties are extensive. Terry Mulligan's great-grandfather and grandfather were UI alumni. Both of their sons are UI graduates: Dan Mulligan, of Morristown, N.J., earned a UI law degree in 1996, graduating with high distinction; Jim Mulligan (1996 B.A.), of Urbandale, Iowa, was captain of the UI swim team who won All-American swimming honors as a Hawkeye. Jim Mulligan's wife, Tasha Reents Mulligan (1997 B.S., 1999 M.P.T.), was an All-American on the UI softball team.

Terry and Susan Mulligan cited their deep respect for the UI and the Iowa Hawkeye football program in their decision to create the scholarship.

"To help a young person combine the academic experience Iowa offers with the life lessons of being a Hawkeye football player is something we've wanted to do for a long time," said Terry Mulligan, the fifth football letterwinner to establish an endowed football scholarship at the UI. "The UI football program under head coach Kirk Ferentz is first-rate, and we're proud to be associated with it."

The UI acknowledges the UI Foundation as the preferred channel for private contributions that benefit all areas of the university.  For more information about the UI Foundation, visit its web site at www.uiowafoundation.org.
