Belin-Blank Center Names Meritorious Inventors

The University of Iowa's Connie Belin and Jacqueline N. Blank International Center for Gifted Education and Talent Development has announced the names of 76 meritorious inventors for their entries at the 2006 Invent Iowa state convention on the UI campus April 22.

The meritorious inventors each will receive a $50 U.S. Savings Bond.

Additionally, six of the meritorious inventors were awarded $500 scholarships from the UI and Iowa State University colleges of engineering. The scholarship can be applied toward tuition if the students decide to attend either of the universities' engineering schools.

This year's state Invention Convention brought together 372 Iowa students in grades three through eight to display 276 inventions in the UI's Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The students, some of whom were co-inventors, represented 151 Iowa towns and 147 schools statewide.

The 76 meritorious inventors were inventors or co-inventors of 60 inventions. The number of meritorious awards varies by grade level and is dependent upon overall quality of inventions and cross-circle evaluation by a group of evaluators. Winners of merit awards are notified through the U.S. mail.

The Belin-Blank Center, part of the UI College of Education, coordinates Invent Iowa. The annual state convention takes place on the UI and ISU campuses alternating years, bringing together students to demonstrate inventions that they believe will make life easier for people. The 2007 convention will take place on the ISU campus in Ames.

Students are encouraged to develop inventions that generally meet the requirements for a patent in the United States: they must be "new, useful and non-obvious." Students are also encouraged to keep journals chronicling their inventions' development from concept to completion.

To reach the state convention, inventions must first qualify at local and regional conventions sponsored by the state's 15 Area Educational Agencies in the months leading up to the state convention.
