Same Planet Different World Dance Theatre Performs Berkey Work Jan. 20

The Same Planet Different World Dance Theatre (SPDW), a Chicago-based modern-dance company co-directed by University of Iowa Dance Department alumna Joanna Rosenthal, will present a free performance of David Berkey's "The Waiting Game" and other works at 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20, in the Space/Place Theatre of UI North Hall.

Berkey, who was a member of the UI dance faculty for nearly 20 years, gave SPDW permission to perform "The Waiting Game" shortly before his death in October 2004. The Dance Department will stage a Berkey retrospective in March.

Other works on the program are "Mantle," choreographed by Jodi Lomask, director of Capacitor Dance of San Francisco; "Vintage Modern" by Zach Whittenberg; "Badum Boom," featuring choreography, costumes and props by University of Arizona faculty member Sam Watson; and "Cold Blooded Old Times" by Faye Discoll, a former member of Doug Varone and Dancers.

Rosenthal directs SPDW with Jeffery Hancock and Katie Saifuku, and the company features dancers and choreographers from Hubbard Street Dance Company, Mordine and Company Dance Theatre and River North Chicago Dance Company. SPDW's repertory ranges in style from classical modern dance to improvisational experiments.

The company has been called "exquisite," "hysterically funny" and "astonishing" by Terry Brennan of the Chicago Reader. Lucia Mauro of the Chicago Sun-Times lauded the company's "seductive athleticism."

SPDW self-produces two Chicago seasons each year, and has participated in major Chicago dance festivals including the Ruth Page Dance Series, Dance Chicago, Focus on the Arts, Choreography Now, and its self-produced festival, Dreaming the Divine.

North Hall is located at the north end of Madison Street on the UI campus. It is accessible from both Madison Street and the Anne Cleary Walk. Parking is available in the North Campus Parking Ramp.
