Scholarship Available For Volunteer Service Trip To Romania
The University of Iowa Alumni Association Iowa Voyagers program is offering a scholarship to help cover costs of a volunteer service trip to work with orphans and school-age children in Romania.
The Voyagers, the UIAA's travel enterprise, are offering the Dr. Ken Magid Child Advocacy Scholarship to assist UI students in paying for a two- or three-week service work trip to Romania departing May 27. The work involves caring for and playing with babies and toddlers in an orphanage or assisting middle-school-age children with English language skills in a school setting. The scholarship covers the hotel room, meals, program materials, and on-site training.
"This is a working trip in which students assist and contribute positively to the life of the local people," said Diane Baker, Iowa Voyagers director.
Linda R. Baker, a 1968 University of Iowa graduate, funded this scholarship that is named in honor of her mentor, Dr. Kenneth Magid, who died in a private airplane crash outside of Denver, Colo. on Aug. 13, 2005. Magid's career encompassed teaching, clinical psychology practice, documentary filmmaking, social science research, television show production, news writing, and many other pursuits.
As her teacher and role model, Magid was a tremendous influence on Baker's own career and service efforts. In 2005, Linda Baker traveled with the Iowa Voyagers to Romania to participate in volunteer service work. "Her time in Romania had such an impact that she wanted to give UI students the opportunity to experience this life- changing trip," Diane Baker said.
The scholarship application deadline is March 15.
