UI Lecture Feb 21 Will Highlight Vienna Heritage Of Iowa Orthopaedics
The public is invited to a University of Iowa History of Medicine talk on "The Vienna Heritage of Iowa Orthopaedics" at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21, in Room 401 of the UI Hardin Library for the Health Sciences.
The speaker will be Joseph A. Buckwalter, M.D., professor and head of the Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation and the Dr. Arthur Steindler Chair of Orthopaedic Surgery at the UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine and UI Hospitals and Clinics.
Light refreshments will be served. The lecture is part of a series of presentations sponsored by the UI History of Medicine Society.
Buckwalter will discuss the accomplishments of Vienna's orthopaedic surgeons and their influence on Arthur Steindler, M.D., who brought their principles to the UI in the early 1900s: surgery excellence combined with research, critical evaluation of treatment outcomes and teaching the next generation of surgeons. The talk also will highlight Steindler's role in transforming orthopaedic care in Iowa and his impact overall on the medical school and hospital complex.
