Voice Professor To Speak On Faith And Music
Does Christian music belong exclusively to Christians? Professor of Voice Stephen Swanson of the University of Iowa School of Music will address this question at his presentation, "Do You Have to Be a Christian to Perform Bach?" as part of the Finding God at Iowa Lunch Forum of Geneva Campus Ministry on Friday, Sept. 1.
The forum will be held from noon to 1 p.m. in River Room 1 of the Iowa Memorial Union on the UI campus. It is free and open to the public.
The School of Music is part of the Division of Performing Arts in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
Swanson has sung in operas, oratorios, and concerts throughout Europe and the United States.
"I have often been complimented on the testimony that is a part of my performance of Christian music," he said. "How do I, as a teacher of singing, help students to understand the spiritual component in great Christian literature when they are not Christians?"
Swanson will address these topics, and audience members will be invited to enter into the discussion.
The "Finding God at Iowa" Forum meets on the first Friday of every month during the fall and spring semesters. Faculty and staff at the university are invited to reflect on how their faith impacts their lives and work, and also on current issues on campus and in society. Discussion among attendees is encouraged.
