Choi Wins Prestigious Mechanical Engineering Award

Kyung K. Choi, Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver Professor of Mechanical Engineering in the University of Iowa College of Engineering Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, has been named the winner of the prestigious Design Division Award by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). The award is the highest given by the Design Automation Committee.

The award will be formally presented during the ASME's Sept. 11-13 International Design Engineering Technical Conference at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.

Choi's current research includes reliability based design optimization, possibility based design optimization, and robust design optimization of various scale mechanical systems from automotive vehicles to micro-electro-mechanical systems. He is also actively involved in durability and reliability development in new U.S. Army vehicles designed for rapid deployability, high mobility and sustainability. His research also involves reduction of high frequency noise in vehicles, and he has research interests in the fields of low frequency design sensitivity analysis and optimization research, which are used by Ford Motor Company for vehicle body design.

Choi earned his bachelor's degree in physics from Yonsei University, Korea, in 1970, and his master's degree in mechanical engineering and doctorate in applied mathematics from the University of Iowa in 1977 and 1980, respectively. His awards include the UI Faculty Scholar Award (1977), Regents Award for Faculty Excellence (2003), College of Engineering Faculty Excellence Award for Research (2003), and two ASME Best Paper Awards (2001 & 2003). He has co-authored three books and 229 papers, including 112 articles in leading engineering journals.

A founding member of the UI Center for Computer Aided Design (CCAD), he served as CCAD's associate director (1990-93), deputy director (1993-95) and director (1995-2003). He is associate editor of five national and international journals. Choi is a Fellow of the ASME, Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and executive committee member of the International Society for Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization.
