Bo Ramsey, International Writing Program Focus of 'Talk of Iowa' Sept. 1
Iowa blues legend Bo Ramsey will provide a live musical backdrop for writers from around the world on the Sept. 1 edition of "Talk of Iowa Live from the Java House."
The public is invited to join the audience for the program, broadcast live on Iowa Public Radio at 10 a.m. on Fridays from the Java House at 211 E. Washington St. in Iowa City. Heard statewide on five public radio stations, the program originates from WSUI-AM 910, the UI's public radio station.
Ramsey, a native of Burlington, Iowa, has played a vital role in shaping Eastern Iowa's distinctive blues-rock hybrid. He has secured his place as a performer, producer, recording session guitarist and "hired gun" in touring bands across the country. Throughout his career, he was worked alongside Iowa musicians such as Joe Price, Patrick Hazell and Greg Brown, as well as national celebrities such as Lucinda Williams and Elvis Costello. His new CD, "Stranger Blues," gathers the songs and sounds he has found inspirational throughout his career.
Also on the program, host Ben Kieffer will talk with UI International Writing Program (IWP) Director Christopher Merrill, who will be joined by several writers participating in this year's residency. Founded in 1967, the IWP was the first writers' residency to reach out across national borders, and remains unique in the world of creative writing. Established writers from across the globe gather for three fall months in Iowa City, becoming part of the lively literary community on and off campus. Over the years, more than 1,000 writers from more than 115 countries have participated in the IWP.
