UI To Hold Student Job Fair Aug. 24
University of Iowa students interested in on-campus employment for the Fall 2006 semester are invited to attend a Student Job Fair from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 24, in the second-floor ballroom of the Iowa Memorial Union.
The fair, sponsored by the University of Iowa Office of Student Financial Aid, will feature a number of university employers and off-campus employers who qualify for Work-Study support based on their government or nonprofit status. A list of the employers attending the fair will appear in The Daily Iowan on Wednesday, Aug. 23. These employers will offer on-campus, part-time hourly positions and Work-Study positions at both-on campus and a limited number of eligible nonprofit off-campus sites. More than 1,800 students attended the 2005 fair and many received job offers or interviews that day. More than 30 employers offering more than 400 job opportunities attended the 2005 event.
In addition, students who were not awarded Work-Study will find opportunities at the fair because many of the employers in attendance will hire students under part-time hourly programs.
Cindy Seyfer, associate director of the Office of Student Financial Aid, says the fair is an excellent opportunity for students interested in working to find out about the variety of jobs available on the university campus and at qualified off-campus Work-Study sites. Staff from the Office of Student Financial Aid will be available to answer questions regarding employment options, verify Work-Study eligibility and explain the payroll process.
Seyfer said students who can balance the demands of employment and academics can pay for educational expenses without incurring loan debt and gain valuable work experience to enhance resumes. In addition, employment on the university campus offers a variety of unique benefits, including flexible work hours, convenient locations often near classes or places of residence, the opportunity to work with mentors in a career field, and competitive wages. Off-campus nonprofit agencies offer a variety of benefits including the opportunity to work in an agency whose mission is to benefit community members.
For more information about the fair, or about part-time or Work-Study job opportunities, contact the student employment area of the Office of Student Financial Aid at 319-335-1460. Students can visit the financial aid web site to view job listings for university and community Work-Study and non-Work-Study jobs. Jobnet, the Web-based advertisement system, is updated daily and can be accessed at www.uiowa.edu/financial-aid/jobnet/
The Student Job Fair is one of a series of activities held in conjunction with "Welcome Week 2006." This annual event is designed to welcome new students and help them become acquainted with the campus, as well as to welcome returning students.
