UI Will Hold Annual Deeded Body Program Memorial Service Aug. 25

The Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology in the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine will hold its annual memorial service for the Deeded Body Program at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 25, at Oakland Cemetery, 1000 Brown St. in Iowa City.

The service will include comments from F. Larry Shostrom, Ph.D., director of pastoral services at UI Hospitals and Clinics, and John Engelhardt, Ph.D., UI professor and interim head of anatomy and cell biology. Students who benefited from the donors' gifts also will attend and participate in the service.

In the case of inclement weather, the memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, located at 1300 Melrose Ave. in Iowa City.

The annual memorial service was established in 1972 to honor and remember those who donate their bodies to allow others to study the science of anatomy. Anatomical gifts made through the UI Deeded Body Program advance medical education and medical science. The service also provides closure to the family and friends of those who have passed away.

Any individual age 18 or older may donate their body to medical education and research at the UI, although certain restrictions may apply which could preclude the use of the gift. The UI Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology requires that a Deed of Disposition be on file with the department prior to the donor's death.
