Free Mumps Shots Available To UI Students April 26-28
University of Iowa Student Health Service will offer free MMR (measles-mumps-rubella) vaccinations for UI students from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. beginning Wednesday, April 26, through Friday, April 28.
Mumps vaccinations at UI Student Health Service are for UI students only, ages 18-22. The clinic is located at 4189 Westlawn on the UI health sciences campus. UI students who have not received two MMR vaccinations should report to the clinic. For more information, call 319-335-8392 or visit www.uiowa.edu/~shs/.
Student Health Service will contact by e-mail UI students who, according to their records, need a second MMR vaccination. UI students who are not ages 18 to 22 also may get a mumps shot for the clinic's normal fee of $53.
The UI clinic is one of three sites in Johnson County participating in a statewide effort to vaccinate 18- to 22-year-olds in 35 Iowa counties that have colleges or universities. The goal is to vaccinate students before they return home for the summer.
Other mumps vaccination clinics in Johnson County are at the Iowa City campus of Kirkwood Community College (Kirkwood students only) and Christ the King Lutheran Church (for non-students in the 18-22 age group) For more information on these sites, contact Johnson County Public Health at 319-356-6040 or visit www.johnson-county.com/publichealth.
Two doses of the MMR vaccine is key to preventing mumps. Since some of the cases in Iowa have occurred in people who have not been vaccinated against mumps, or who have received only one dose, the April 26-28 campaign will focus on getting the mumps vaccine to these people.
Iowa has seen more than 900 cases of mumps this year, with the highest number of cases among young adults.
More information about mumps is available on the Iowa Department of Public Health Web site at www.idph.state.ia.us.
