18th Annual Wheelchair Challenge Set For April 28
The Graduate Program in Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science in the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine will host its 18th annual Wheelchair Challenge Friday, April 28.
The Wheelchair Challenge is an event to raise awareness of persons with disabilities and the challenges they face. This year's events include an obstacle course from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Hubbard Park at the Iowa Memorial Union and a wheelchair basketball game featuring Hawkeye football, field hockey, gymnastics and volleyball athletes playing the Covenant Chairiots, a wheelchair basketball team from Waterloo, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the North Gym of the UI Field House North.
Featured speakers Teresa Meinert and Michelle Laughlin will give their personal testimonies of living with a disability at halftime of the basketball game.
The events are free and open to the public. Those who attend can purchase raffle tickets for prizes to be awarded at the basketball game. Raffle proceeds will go to Miracles In Motion in Swisher, Iowa, a local organization that provides services to individuals with disabilities.
