UIAA Names Scholarship Recipients For Romania Service Project
The University of Iowa Alumni Association has announced the first recipients of the Ken Magid Child Advocacy Scholarship for service work in Romania. Lily Sprengelmeyer, a senior from Galena, Ill., and Bridget Szeluga, a freshman from Elmhurst, Ill., were selected from a field of 30 candidates to travel to Romania May 27 through June 10 to work with children in an orphanage and school.
The work involves caring for and playing with babies and toddlers or assisting middle-school-age children with conversational English skills. Through the scholarships, the UIAA will cover approximately $2,500 in travel costs for each recipient.
"We were so pleased with the caliber of all the applicants and are confident Lily and Bridget will represent the UI extremely well. This is definitely a civic engagement program in which students will contribute positively to the life of the local Romanian people," said Diane Baker, scholarship committee chair.
The scholarship, in its first year, pays for two UI students to do volunteer service overseas and is funded by Linda R. Baker, a 1968 UI alumna from Golden, Colo. Baker, who took the Romania service trip in 2005, said, "My time in Romania had such an impact on me that I wanted to give UI students the opportunity to experience this life-changing trip."
Baker named the scholarship in memory of her mentor, Dr. Kenneth Magid, an exceptional educator, counselor, scholar, mentor and role model. His career encompassed teaching, clinical psychology practice, documentary filmmaking, social science research, television show production and many other pursuits. Magid died in a private airplane crash in August 2005.
The scholarship is administered by the Iowa Voyagers, the travel service of the UI Alumni Association. For more details, contact Diane Baker (no relationship to Linda Baker) director of Iowa Voyagers, University of Iowa Alumni Association, 335-3293, 800-469-2586, or firstname.lastname@example.org.
