Provost Names Interim Dean Of UI College Of Nursing

Martha Craft-Rosenberg, professor of nursing, has been named interim dean of the University of Iowa College of Nursing, effective June 1, 2006 and continuing until a new dean has been appointed. Craft-Rosenberg succeeds Melanie C. Dreher, who has served as dean of the college for nine years, but in January announced her resignation to accept the deanship at Rush University College of Nursing in Chicago.

Craft-Rosenberg, who joined the College of Nursing faculty in 1980, currently serves as chair of the parent, child and family area of study in the college. She is an elected fellow of the American Academy of Nursing, the profession's highest honor.

"Dr. Craft-Rosenberg's 25 years at the College of Nursing have been distinguished by her teaching, her many research initiatives and her service to the university and on behalf of many health-care constituents in Iowa and nationally," said UI Executive Vice President and Provost Michael J. Hogan. "I'm confident that she will provide the steady, informed leadership we need as the college transitions to a new administration."

An active researcher, Craft-Rosenberg's work has focused on the siblings of ill children and the families of critically ill patients. She has also been active and is well-known for her work in the taxonomy of nursing diagnosis, interventions and outcomes. The author of 59 articles, four book chapters and seven books, her research on children and families has garnered awards from the American Association for Critical Care Nursing and the Midwest Nursing Research Society. She is the first editor of the book Nursing Interventions for Infants and Children, which was awarded the American Journal of Nursing and Pediatric Nursing Book of the Year Awards in 2000.

Before assuming her current position, Craft-Rosenberg served for nine years as area chair for human responses to illness, in addition to teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and supervising graduate thesis and dissertation research.
