Famed Marathoner Headlines UI Sports Medicine Seminar

UI Sports Medicine will host a special symposium for runners, featuring champion marathon runner Alberto Salazar, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6 in the Sahai Auditorium in the Medical Education and Biomedical Research Facility on the University of Iowa campus.

A member of the National Distance Running Hall of Fame, Salazar will share his experience and advice on how to improve your approach to running. Salazar set six U.S. records and one world record. His first marathon in 1980 was the fastest debut marathon at the time, and his victory over Dick Beardsley in the 1982 Boston Marathon is hailed as the most memorable battle in that race's history.

Stan James, M.D., an UI alumnus and orthopaedic surgeon, will join Salazar. James was among the first researchers to study the strides of runners in a special gait laboratory and also provided prototype shoe designs to Nike.

Ned Amendola, M.D., UI professor of orthopaedics and director of the UI Sports Medicine, and physical therapist Dick Evans will round out the panel of experts. Presenters will discuss a range of topics, including:

-- Running like a champion

-- How to approach training for injury prevention

-- Common examples of overuse injuries

-- Finding and correcting muscle imbalances

The panel's experts will also answer questions from members of the audience. Light snacks and refreshments will be served.

"Runner's Symposium: Maximize Your Running Potential," is designed for runners of all ages and abilities. Because space is limited, organizers recommend that you register for this free, educational seminar by calling UI Health Access at 319-384-8442 or toll free 800-777-8442.
