Theatre Undergraduates Will Have Directing Debut Sept. 29-Oct. 2

Four undergraduate students from the University of Iowa Department of Theatre Arts will make their directing debut in the Undergraduate Directors' Festival, presented at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, Sept. 29-Oct. 1, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 2, in the David Thayer Theatre of the UI Theatre Building.

The Undergraduate Directors Festival is a new event of the Department of Theatre Arts. The festival will showcase the work of talented students and gives audiences a chance to see four short plays in a single evening.

This year's festival includes three pieces drawn from "All in the Timing," a collection of short plays by David Ives that has played to acclaim around the world. Danielle Santangelo directs "Variations on the Death of Trotsky," Shanda Wells directs "Long Ago and Far Away" and Vince Brown directs "Foreplay, or the Art of the Fugue." The fourth one-act, directed by Heather Bodie, is Jim Geoghan's "Tom and Jerry."

Alan McVey, director of the UI Department of Theatre Arts, said, "All four plays are comedies with serious undertones. Three of them explore relationships on the verge of falling apart, while 'Trotsky' is classic David Ives: a man with an axe in his head tries to figure out how not to be murdered. Together the plays create an evening that is funny, crazy and sometimes quite moving."

Tickets to the Directors Festival will be $6 ($4 for UI students, seniors and youth 18 and under) and will be available at the door one hour before performance times.

The Department of Theatre Arts is part of the Division of Performing Arts in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
