UI Researcher Named International Study Coordinator By NCI
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) has named a nurse researcher at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics as its international study coordinator for the first NCI Private-Public Partnership.
Kim Sprenger will serve in the post under the oversight of the National Institutes of Health Foundation. She will also continue her duties at UI Hospitals and Clinics.
Sprenger is currently serving as the UI research coordinator for the Endobronchial Valve for Emphysema Palliation Trial, or VENT. A team at UI Hospitals and Clinics is studying a new approach to treating patients affected by severe emphysema that they hope will improve their ability to breathe more normally.
Sprenger also coordinates the National Lung Screening Trial (NLST), an effort designed to determine if computed tomography scans enhance the detection of early stage cancers in the lungs and help prevent lung cancer deaths.
"Ms. Sprenger is a very highly skilled professional who performs at the highest level," said Geoffrey McLennan, M.D., lead investigator for VENT and NLST at UI Hospitals and Clinics and professor of internal medicine in the UI Carver College of Medicine. "I have no doubt whatsoever that she will continue to achieve at the same high levels for the NCI."
Sprenger began her nursing career in 1985. She joined the staff of UI Hospitals and Clinics in 1997.
